Truro’s popular Professional, Nigel Bicknell, ably assisted by Lee Mitchell, presides over a well-stocked shop.
Long recognised as one of the best golf teachers in the South West, Nigel is particularly noted as a coach of junior players. Since 1973, some 13 juniors have gone to become qualified PGA professionals. Amongst those learning the game at Truro, many have represented Cornwall at junior and senior levels and several have achieved international recognition.
Nigel’s coaching is largely responsible for the success of the Club’s team recently winning the 2009 Cornwall Championships beating all-comers decisively round by round and culminating in defeating Newquay 2-1 in the final. This despite the tragic loss of their number one player Ben Enoch who was killed in a recent motor accident. The team dedicated their win to Ben’s memory.
Ben’s elder brother Rhys is currently on a golf scholarship at America’s prestigious East Tennessee State University – again following Nigel’s inspired coaching throughout his early playing years.
Now comes news that 22-year-old Tom Murtagh – another of Nigel’s star pupils – has carried of the Cornwall Men’s County Championship.
Truro’s Junior Girls are also making their mark. None more so than 17-year-old Sarah Jane Boyd who has become the 2009 Cornwall Ladies Champion for the second time – a title she previously won at the age of 15 when she became the youngest ever winner of the title.
So Truro players hold the County Mens’, Ladies and Mens Team Championships!
